Brief History of the Institution

The  Craft Production and Design Division was located at 237 Camp Street, Georgetown. It was established on January 1, 1978 as a separate Division, having evolved from the Community Development Division under the Ministry of  Co-operatives Development Division under the Ministry of  Co-operatives with Cde. Desmond Hoyte, S.C.,M.P., as Minister.

Over the years, the  Division was sustained by funds provided by Central Government as well as generation of its own resources through a Revolving Fund. This division was transferred to the  Ministry of Education on the 1st January  1995.

The Craft Production and Design Division of the Ministry of Education is primarily  a remedial institution, which attracts young persons who might not have been able to complete their secondary education, due to challenges.

It  is one of the Technical Vocational (TECH-VOC) Schools  in Guyana that provides training for out of school youths and early school leavers. They are provided with craft skills by which they gain employment or  become entrepreneurs.

  1. Provide students with handicraft skills for the production of craft for the local and international market.
  2. Utilize indigenous material and re-usable material for the production of craft.
  3. Develop skills in design and layout using Computer-Aided design software to produce craft and promotional material
  4. To implement occupational standards  in skills training and to produce quality assured craft items.
